Education

Private School

There are several area private schools covering pre-K through 12th grades. If more information is needed about the private schools in the Meridian area such as tuition, test scores, and location please contact the School Liaison Officer at NAS Meridian.

Public School

The Meridian area has two public school systems: Meridian Public Schools and Lauderdale County Public Schools.

Meridian Public School Registration

If you recently moved into the Meridian Public School District, you can obtain information about which school your child will attend by calling 601-483-6271. You may register your child by completing the forms available in that school's office. There are no registration fees. However, there may be fees associated with athletics, clubs, yearbooks, etc.

To register a student for kindergarten, a child must be five years old on or before August 31. Two proofs of residency, a copy of your child's birth certificate, social security card, and proof of immunization are required. See Meridian Public School's web site for immunization requirements.

To enroll other students, the school will request records from the former school. However, for students new to the district, two proofs of residency, a copy of your child's birth certificate, social security card, and proof of immunization are required.Meridian Public School System has 7 elementary, 2 middle, 2 junior high, 1 high school, and 1 career/vocational center.

Lauderdale County Public School Registration

If you recently moved into the Lauderdale County Public School District, you can obtain information about which school your child will attend by calling 601-693-1683. You may register your child by completing the forms available in that school's office. There are no registration fees. However, there may be fees associated with athletics, clubs, yearbooks, etc.

To register a student for kindergarten, first grade, and other grades: A student who is five years of age on or before September 1 may enter kindergarten. State law requires that a child must be six years of age on or before September 1 of this school year to be able to enter first grade. The following forms are required upon registration:

  • Certified Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Immunization Form (May be obtained from a physician, County Health Department, or NAS Medical Facility)
  • Residency Verification (filed homestead exemption application or automobile registration and 2 other documents)

Lauderdale County Public School System has 4 elementary, 3 middle, 1 junior high, and 4 high schools. Residence of student determines the specific school to be attended. Students who live on-base will attend the Northeast Lauderdale Schools.

Meridian Public Schools as well as Lauderdale County Public Schools are accredited through the Mississippi Department of Education.

There are bus services offered by both public school districts aforementioned. The School Age Care (SAC) at NAS Meridian provides busing of students to a school located within the Lauderdale County School System. For more information about bus systems at NAS Meridian please contact the SAC center at 601-679-5252. 

Meal plans are provided for students at all of the public institutions. Free/Reduced Lunch opportunities are available to students as well for those who need it. For more information about the Food Services in the Meridian Public School District please contact MPSD Food Services Department.  Also to access information about the Food Services at the Food Services in the Lauderdale County Public School district please contact LCPSD Nutrition Office.

There are multiple “before and after school” programs available for students. Parents must contact the schools individual to inquire about the fees and times associated with each program. Other centers including the Boys and Girls Club (Meridian) and KinderCare provide after school services in the Meridian area. For more information please contact our School Liaison Officer.

There are multiple opportunities for students to get involved in school sports and athletic departments. Starting in middle school (6th -7th grades) throughout high school (9th-12thgrades), students have access to football, basketball, baseball, track & field, soccer, and golf programs.

Achievement Test Scores:

The achievement test scores are based on standardized yearly examinations that provided to students throughout the state of Mississippi to evaluate basic content and critical thinking of students. Those tests are given at various grade levels and are composed of subjects like Biology, US History, English, and Mathematics. D-    60

F-59 and below

Note: There are no Magnet schools in this area. 

Adult Education

There are opportunities for adult education here in Meridian, MS. We have programs  for individuals to receive GEDs, as well as associate and baccalaureate degrees. We also have programs in place to assist with obtaining technical degrees in many fields including medical, cooking, automotive, and design.
