FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How long will it take to pack and pick up my property?
A: According to regulations and the local moving companies any shipment 4,999 lbs and under can be packed and picked up in one day, shipments 5,000 lbs to 9,999 lbs will take two days to pack and one day to pickup, shipments 10,000 lbs to 14,999 lbs take three days to pack and one day to pick up - for every 5,000 lbs thereafter one day will be added for packing. One of the past problems encountered is when a member under-estimates his/her move weight. This could cause additional pack days to be added to your shipment and should be addressed at the pre-move survey. Remember it’s a lot easier to drop days and finish a move earlier than to find resources/crews necessary to “squeeze in another day” - especially during the summer peak season, so try and be as accurate as possible when making your estimation.
Q: I’m having problems logging into DPS – What can I do?
A: Normally if you can’t get into DPS it’s because you haven’t turned your Pop-up Blocker OFF or your computer isn’t compatible with the DPS system. Move.mil has a section which specifies system requirements when using DPS. ** BOTTOM LINE – If you are having problems entering the DPS system you can come to our office and use DMO computer assets.
Q: Can I do a combination of Government Arranged Move (GAM) and Personally Procured Move (PPM)?
A: On CONUS moves you can do a combination of both moves, but you must stay within your prescribe JFTR weight allowance with both shipments.
Q: What is an advance operating allowance? Am I authorized this allowance?
A: When you move using the PPM/DITY method you will be paid 95% of what it would have cost to move your property using a commercial carrier under the Government Arranged Move program based on your estimated weight. You are required to get an empty weight of the moving vehicle and a full weight and will be paid on actual weight moved. You are authorized an advance operating allowance when using commercial assets (i.e. rental truck or trailer). This allowance is based on your estimated weight – Marines get 50% of their estimated 95% up front and Navy gets 60%.
NOTE: You will not be given an advance when using a personal POV to transport your property.
Q: I’m going overseas on an unaccompanied tour and have dependants – they want to go home so what are my options?
A: You can move your dependants to a designated place when assigned to an unaccompanied tour overseas. You can also ship some property to your overseas location and if necessary place property into Non-Temporary Storage (NTS) here at Camp Lejeune. The combined weight of all shipments must stay within your JFTR weight allowance.
Q: How soon should I come in to arrange my move?
A: During normal periods of the year we can arrange your Government Arranged Move with 8 days notice but during the summer peak season (May, June, July, August) booking your shipment could present a challenge if less than 30 days notice is provided.
IT IS NEVER TOO EARLY TO ARRANGE YOUR MOVE.
Q: I arranged a move but need to change my dates – How can I make changes?
A: Once a Transportation Service Provider (TSP) is assigned to your shipment all dates are negotiable with that carrier during the pre-move survey. All date changes can be made with the carrier, but if you are having problems, contact our booking section for assistance. If you need to completely cancel a move, DMO requires you to come in and make the request in person or make the request via a digitally signed e-mail from your military account.
Q: I received my shipment but have property that was lost or damaged. What is the process to file a claim?
A: If you shipment was moved using the DPS system you will file your claim on-line. Log on to move.mil and click on Claims/CSS and you will find a “how to PDF” and “how to video” to walk you thru the process. The overall claims process and the claims filing deadlines are also provided. Keep in mind claims is a two step process.
• Step One: You must file your loss/damage report within 75 days of delivery.
• Step Two: You must file your claim within 9 months of delivery.
(NOTE: If your shipment was not done in DPS contact our claims person at 910-450-8439/8762 for instructions.)
If you have problems during your move, call the Quality Assurance officer at 910-450-8409. They can send an inspector out to your home.
