Travel Planning
*Concurrent travel - most students at Goodfellow AFB are not authorized to relocate their family here at government expense. It is important to make temporary lodging reservations early. Contact either your current family center or the Goodfellow AFB Airman and Family Readiness Center for relocation planning. Make sure to keep all receipts - food, gas, lodging, pet expenses, etc - while in transit. Some receipts may be needed when you file your travel voucher upon your arrival. Some receipts may be needed when you file your taxes next year. Travel and Relocation Entitlements - members may contact the finance office and/or TMO to determine entitlements based on their exact situation; the Joint Travel Regulation (JTR) is the governing source on travel and relocation entitlements. Most students here do not receive full relocation entitlements, as this is not a Permanent Duty Station (PDS) for them. On a "usual" PDS to PDS relocation, the government will normally provide or pay for transportation for the member and family from PDS to PDS; pay for lodging and meals along the way; provide or pay for lodging in the area of the old and new PDS while member is not in a permanent residence; pay Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to assist with the expenses of setting up a household; provide or pay for shipment of household goods from PDS to PDS, or from Home of Record to PDS.
Getting Married Enroute
*If you get married before you PCS, you MUST inform your commander and follow the procedures exactly as you are given them. The military WILL NOT PAY for travel and housing of your spouse if you do not follow the proper procedures.
After Arrival at Goodfellow AFB
*Contact your sponsor upon your arrival. Contact the Traffic Management Office, if you shipped household goods or a vehicle. If any of your household goods were damaged or lost in transit you MUST inform the Legal Claims office within 70 days of delivery. Use the DD Form 1840 and 1840 R to file your report. Contact the Housing Office for dormitory, apartment, and on- and off-base housing. Military members MUST contact the Housing Office prior to signing a lease. Single members below the rank of E-4 who will live off-base must go to Housing before finance will start BAH. File travel vouchers during Base In-processing, 7:30 a.m. Mondays or Wednesdays, bldg 145, or at the Finance Office. Members who used the Government Travel Card should be prepared to provide the total dollar amount charged on the card, as they will receive a split disbursement. Newcomers' Welcome (for permanent party only) is held the 1st Tuesday of each month at the Events Center, 8:00 a.m. This is mandatory for all arriving permanent party AF members. Sister services and Department of Defense civilians are invited; spouses are encouraged to attend. Most Air Force enlisted members whose first permanent duty assignment is Goodfellow AFB will be scheduled for First Term Airman's Center (FTAC) instead of Newcomers' Welcome; your inprocessing checklist will provide details. Visit the Airman and Family Readiness Center for maps and newcomer information, family member employment assistance, volunteerism information, childcare for PCS voucher (Air Force only), Heart Link (orientation for new spouses), budget assistance, financial classes, marriage/baby/parenting classes, emergency assistance and with any questions you may have. (Loan closet items are available free of charge with a copy of your orders from Equipment Rental in Bldg. 736, 325-654-3254.) Contact your family to let them know you have arrived and how to contact you.
