This is a high cost of living area, primarily due to the high cost of housing. The history of this lovely town dates back to the beginnings of our nation and it is a beautiful setting for the Academy. The Annapolis Area Naval Complex is composed of the U.S. Naval Academy, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, and other tenant commands.

The USNA current curriculum consists of four consecutive years at Annapolis with at-sea training during the summer. Eighteen academic majors are offered which lead to a Bachelor of Science degree for all graduates. The base operator's phone number is 410-293-1000 or DSN 312-281-1000.

History

The United States Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis. Since then, the history of the Naval Academy has reflected the history of the United States. As our country has changed culturally and technologically, so has the Naval Academy. In only a few decades, the Navy has moved from a fleet of sail and steam-powered ships to a high-tech fleet with nuclear-powered submarines and surface ships and supersonic aircraft. The Academy has changed, too, giving midshipmen the up-to-date academic and professional training they need to be effective naval officers in their assignments after graduation.

Every day, as the undergraduate college of the naval service, the United States Naval Academy strives to accomplish its mission to develop midshipmen "morally, mentally, and physically."

Mission

To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character, to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.

Naval Support Activity (NSA) Annapolis is located across the Severn River from the Naval Academy. Its mission is to provide material, personnel and service support to the Naval Academy by maintaining small craft, equipment and facilities for Midshipmen training, and by providing logistical support to the Naval Academy in its Midshipmen professional development program.

Population Served

The population served includes the entire student body of midshipmen and the tenant commands. The Academy is a 338-acre complex with a brigade of 4,400 midshipmen, and 580 faculty members (military and civilian).
