Activities
There are so many activities for each and every military base that we’re asking for your help and listing them. So please tell us what you think the next person PCSing to your location should know about activities on or off base for you and your family.
There are some places on base, for recreation, that you need to become familiar with. These are some of the facilities available to you:
The sports and fitness center, which just recently has been renovated, has basketball courts, racquetball courts, a cardiovascular exercise room, a weight lifting room and separate Body Master circuit training area. Outdoor recreational facilities include basketball courts, three softball fields, running track, football and soccer field, multi-purpose field and four tennis courts.
The swimming pool, is a heated indoor, 26 by 20 meter pool with an outdoor sun tanning area. Lap and recreational swimming are offered year-round.
The trap and skeet range, has eight trap and three skeet ranges for shotgun shooting. Shotguns are available for on-range rental. Membership is not required.
The Silver Sage Riding Club and Stable were established privately to provide a recreational outlet for members and their families and to promote an interest in good horsemanship. Currently, Silver Sage Stable has 45 stalls. The facilities include a large, lighted area, holding pens, one round exercise pen and clubhouse. Each stall has a fenced paddock, enclosed stall and private tack room. All stalls are equipped with electricity and running water. A stabling fee and club membership are required. Each horse must have a current health certificate and a negative Coggins test. Miles of prairie trails suitable for riding are located next to the stable area.
The skills development center, has facilities for every major craft. The center offers ceramics, pottery, wood working, framing and fine art classes. The resale store carries various supplies for wood crafts, framing and matting.
The library, contains materials for the technical, educational, cultural, and recreational needs of active and retired military personnel, their family members, and civilian personnel assigned here. It offers educational, recreational and children's books. The library has public-use computers with internet access, typewriters a copy machine, FAX machine, video equipment for viewing educational tapes, microfiche readers, investment publications and interlibrary loan services.
The automotive skills development center, offers complete facilities for the amateur auto mechanic. The shop has 18 stalls and is equipped with seven auto lifts, a steam cleaner, paint booth, arc and oxy-acetylene welding, scan tools, wheel balancing, complete tire servicing and valve grinding capability. Group and individual instruction is available. A three bay car wash is located adjacent to the center.
Kegler's Korner, a 16-lane facility, offers winter and summer bowling leagues with some daytime leagues. All lanes are equipped with bumper bowling and automatic scoring. The snack bar which is located next to the bowling area, offers breakfast, luncheon specials and full dinners.
The community center, services include ticket and tour operations, dances, instructional classes, talent shows, concerts, a theater group, airman's lounge and a pizza parlor.
The Gunfighter's Club, has a dining room, casual bars, ballroom and separate rooms for private parties. The club offers combined dining for all ranks, lunchtime specials and live entertainment. It also contains an enlisted lounge and an officers lounge. Catering facilities are available.
The Silver Sage Golf Course has a regulation 18-hole course, driving range and practice green. The clubhouse, has a pro shop and snack bar. Tournaments and intramural leagues are offered throughout the summer. Group and private golf lessons are available, as are power golf cart and club rentals.
The Outdoor Adventure Program, offers white water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, rock climbing, mountain biking, crosscountry skiing and snowmobiling activities. Trips range from one to seven days. Experienced leaders accompany participants of all skill levels. Transportation is provided. The OAP also has a reference area with guide and information books, magazines and topographical maps.
Recreation equipment checkout, rents hunting, fishing, camping, boating, skiing, gardening and sporting equipment. Sleeping bags, tents, camp trailers, fishing and bass boats, downhill and cross country skis, winter fishing equipment, log splitters, garden tools, rototillers, lawn mowers, carpet and upholstery cleaning machines and other items are available. Retail sales of ski equipment and clothing, rug shampoo equipment, trailer wiring and electrical hook-ups are offered. Instructional videos on hunting, camping, fishing, and skiing are also available for rent.
Thirteen trailers are sited right at the back door of Yellowstone National Park. Trailers come with a kitchen, dishes, pots and pans, and cutlery. They will sleep up to six and are well located. We have trailers on the west entrance (Lionshead) and on the south entrance (Flagg Ranch).
They are priced to save a family a considerable difference compared to local motels. All trailers have fire pits to encourage campfire activities.
The off-base recreation area/marina, located about 25 miles south of the base, offers various activities. Boats, jet skis, sailboats, paddle boats, wind surfers and all accessories are available for rent. In addition, there is a fenced-in patio and covered tables for picnic and barbecue needs. The snack bar sells snacks, food and fishing supplies. The season runs May through September.
