Activities


The Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs are a great source of information on recreational opportunities. Programs are available to active and reserve forces as well as DoD civilians, retirees and their families.

For a complete listings of all local area events, special prices on local attraction or theme park tickets, hotel/moteland rental car arrangements contact the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department's information, tickets and travel.  

The MWR Information, Tickets and Tours (ITT) Office at Port Hueneme is located at Building 1167, phone number (805)982-4284.  The ITT Office at Point Mugu is located in Building 16 in the Navy Exchange Complex, phone number (805)989-7628. Both offices serve as point-of-contact for prices and information regarding popular Southern California tourist attractions, such as Disneyland, Universal Studios, Magic Mountain, the San Diego Zoo, etc., as well as for information on camping, boating, skiing, etc.

Take advantage of the services at the ITT Offices to help make your tour at Naval Base Ventura County a special time.  All of the MWR facilities and services are available for use by active duty military, family members and DOD civilians at either site.  The usual kinds of on-base leisure activity facilities (swimming pools, golf courses, gymnasiums, fitness equipment and classes, hobby shops, bowling alleys, recreational clubs/food service facilities, movie theatres, sports fields) and even some unusual ones (ocean kayaking) may be found here.   Surf.net( Point Mugu site) is the home of the Liberty Program, which is designed for single active duty military personnel 18 years of age and older. Computers, video games, mini theater and pool tables are available. Coffee.net located onboard Port Hueneme offers similar activites. Movies at the Point Mugu Theater and the Port Hueneme(Needham Theatre) are free. The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department's Youth Centers on base and in Camarillo  offer great activities for kids after school and on weekends.   The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department Youth Centers provides youth sports program for soccer, basketball and flag football.  Youth baseball is provided by a Youth Sports/Baseball League.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL - This area has the largest, sweetest strawberries in the world and every May the Annual Strawberry Festival comes along with lots of attractions and strawberries served every way you can think of. The festival is at College Park in Oxnard, just off the Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1) at Channel Islands.  For information, telephone Bill Garlock, Manager of the Festival at 888-288-9242

CALIFORNIA BEACH PARTY - To celebrate Ventura County's wonderful weather ("Where Summer Never Ends") and fantastic beaches, each September there is a weekend celebration full of lively entertainment on the beach at the Ventura Beach Promenade [off the Ventura Freeway (Hwy 101) at California Street].  Food, fun, and sporting competition for everyone.

OJAI FESTIVAL - To add to the culture of Ventura County every year, beginning in the last week of May or early June, Ojai has a three-week-long Shakespeare Festival.  The Festival includes matinee shows on the lawn, evenings of full productions on stage, an internship for high school students for acting/backstage arts/ and all phases of production, a Kids Workshop for junior high students, and much much more.  Don't miss this festival at Libbey Bowl Park in Ojai.  For information call (805) 646-2094.

VENTURA COUNTY FAIR - Every August the entire county heads for the fairgrounds in Ventura.  Whether you are interested in livestock competition and auctions, rodeos, midway rides and games, or concerts featuring rock and country-western stars, this is the place to be.  For information call 1-800-4-Ventura.

WHALE WATCHING - From December to June, the California Grey Whale migrates past our shores on its 5,000 mile journey from the Bering Sea to the warm waters of Baja, California.  Whale-watching boat excursions leave from the Ventura and Channel Islands Harbor.  

MWR's ITT has information and tickets (at a discount) for most attractions.  Contact them for prices and information regarding popular Southern California tourist attractions, such as Disneyland, Universal Studios, Magic Mountain, the San Diego Zoo, etc., as well as for information on camping, boating, skiing, etc.

There are several area Boys & Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, and other organizations to aid kids and teens in finding constructive and fun activities to occupy their time.  All of our area schools also have sports programs for students.

Youth Baseball is provided by a Youth Sports/Baseball League. Contact the MWR Youth Program for a POC.  See information under "Chapel Services" For Special Events, there are several places you need to check.  The Morale, Welfare & Recreation Department puts out an MWR insert in the biweekly base newspaper.

Ventura County has houses of worship for every denomination.  Consult the local telephone book for numbers or contact the Fleet and Family Support Center, Relocation Counselor for assistance in finding your particular church or group.
