General Information about DC, VA, and MD Schools

Grades available:  Pre-K through 12

Entrance Requirements: Proof of immunizations, birth certificate, proof of residence, and Social Security number.

Transfer requirements: Latest report Card or transfer form, proof of immunizations, proof of residence, and Social Security number.

 

 

Public Schools

District of Columbia

DC has a neighborhood school system and the designated schools for housing areas on JBAB are Leckie Elementary School, Hart MS, Ballou SHS. 

DC residents may participate in enrollment in other public schools outside of the neighborhood boundaries during the annual Out of Boundary Lottery which takes place in February of each year. Parents can select other schools outside of the neighborhood boundaries for their child for the following school year. Please call for the information available on the Out of Boundary Lottery.

Families relocating to JBAB should contact the JBAB School Liaison Officer (SLO) at 202-404-1652 for specific guidance on school choice. Families are encouraged to contact the SLO whenever assistance is needed with placement of any school age child.

Residing on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling

Families residing on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling can select from the following options for preschool through 12th grade school age children:

  1. Enrollment in the neighborhood DC public school  -- *Kindergarten, your child must turn five (5) years of age on or before September 30th to be eligible.
  2. Enrollment in a DC Public Charter School-open to DC residents, public charter schools are a free options to consider along with other public school choice.  Public Charter schools do not have neighborhood boundaries but do have specific application timelines. Application timelines are posted on the DC Public Charter School website. Families should consider contacting the charter school directly as application timelines may not coincide with military relocation timelines.
  3. High School age students that meet entrance requirements should consider application to one of the DCPS Selective Citywide Schools.
  4. JBAB also offers a preschool option on base through the Child Development Center and interested families should contact the CDC for more information 202-767-2890.

Maryland or Virginia

Families considering relocating to nearby Maryland or Virginia can explore schools by neighborhood using the school boundary link on Maryland or Virginia Department of Education websites.  

Maryland counties near JBAB include Prince Georges County and Montgomery County. JBAB is within commuting distance to the City of Alexandria and the following Virginia Counties:  Fairfax County, Arlington County, Loudon County, and Prince William County.

School Bus Program

The JBAB School Bus Program is part of the Military and Family Support Center and operates out of the Youth Center, 4485 Arnold Avenue, Joint Base Anacostia Bolling, Washington, DC  20032. The School Bus Program provides specific information on schools available through the school bus transportation service. Families relocating to JBAB should contact the School Liaison Officer 202-404-1652 or the School Bus Office 202-767-8138 to obtain a complete package of information on school choice, and bussing for JBAB residents.

Kindergarten/Preschool

For kindergarten, your child must turn five (5) years of age on or before September 30th to be eligible. Click here for more information.

Preschool is not mandatory, but available in most DCPS elementary schools. All elementary schools in DCPS offer pre-kindergarten. 

For preschool, your child must turn three (3) years of age on or before September 30thto be eligible. Pre-Kindergarten, your child must turn four years of age on or before September 30th to be eligible.

Adult Education

The Education Services Center on JBAB and satellite office at the Pentagon, provide full education support and services. On-base education programs are designed to provide career-long learning. In addition to the on-base education programs, the Metro area contains a large number of excellent higher education facilities.  Contact the Education Office at 202-767-5838 for more information.
