5 Tips for PCSing with Kids

Sooner or later, we are all on the receiving end of PCS orders. While it can be a challenging and stressful time for adults, the experience can be even more daunting to kids. During this time of transition, kids need extra tender love and care. To make the PCS as smooth as possible, try these some of these tried and true tips.

Discuss the Move with Your Kids

Despite the chaos that has probably ensued with the announcement of orders, it’s important to take the time to sit down and talk about the upcoming move. Involving the kids in the planning process can help put their mind at ease during the moving process. For instance, allow them to help you hunt for your new home or choose the new school. Get them excited for the upcoming new location by showing them available activities, the new neighborhood, fun state facts, and more. If you color code your boxes or your tape, that’s an effective and simple way to get your kids involved. Let them choose which color box/tape they want to be designated to their items.

Plan to Sightsee

Once on the road, make planned stops at fun destinations. There are many free roadside attractions that you and the kids will love! Take lots of pictures and treat the road trip as one big adventure. Pinterest is an excellent resource for finding activities and sights to see on an extended ride.

Pick A Family Friendly Hotel

After a long day of driving (and sightseeing!) it’s time to relax by the pool. Finding a hotel that offers a pool and complimentary breakfast is a great way to start and end each day. Bonus if it also includes a hot tub! If you are already a rewards member to a specific chain, ask if you can cash in some of those points for an upgraded room. Or, if you are not yet a member, you can sign up before hitting the road. Also, make sure to call the hotel directly to see if they can offer any additional perks or discounts for booking directly through them.
